Jamaaladeen Tacuma born Rudy McDaniel June 11, 1956 is an American free jazz bassist born in Hempstead, New York. He was a bandleader on the Gramavision label and worked with Ornette Coleman during the 1970s and 1980s, mostly in Coleman's Prime Time band. Tacuma showcased a unique style of avant-garde jazz on Coleman's 1982 album Of Human Feelings, and became widely viewed as one of the most distinctive bassists since Jaco Pastorius. He formed his own group, and recorded albums that incorporated. Though led and largely written by electric-bassist Tacuma, this is basically a new Ornette Coleman recording, and a pretty good one too. It's an octet studio session from last year, with Coleman playing alto alongside the UK's Tony Kofi on tenor, and Wolfgang Puschnig on flute. Unusually for Coleman, there's even a pianist, Yoichi Uzeki. The closing sequence is a killer: a spacey ballad, followed by the funky Vibe on This OC, whose riff is reprised in the final Celebration. Tacuma was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and showed interest in music at a young age, performing with the organist Charles Earland in his teens. Through Earland Tacuma read more. This sprawling session is more conventional than Ornette Coleman's breakthrough work, but impressive nonetheless, says John Fordham. Initiated by bass guitarist and 1970s Coleman protege Jamaaladeen Tacuma, it brings together a remarkable bespoke band including British tenor saxist Tony Kofi, Carla Bley's versatile Austrian reeds-player Wolfgang Puschnig, Japanese pianist Yoichi Uzeki, teenage Philadelphia drummer Justin Faulkner and Coleman himself.
